WEEK 28/52: Scientific American

Scientific American was an experiment inspired by one of my favourite artists, Beck.  I heard that on Odelay he used a da da-like process to write lyrics, cutting up pieces of paper with random phrases and putting them together in different ways to find meaning.

After working out the chord progression and bridge, I sat down with a copy of Scientific American and flipped through, writing down phrases I found powerful or compelling.  After some tweaking, the song was born.  While it’s a bit chaotic at times, I feel like it captures some of the unease I feel about modern America’s relentless march toward technological progress. – Bucky

LYRICS

You know ice not need to melt,
To add to rising seas.
You know what, a floating iceberg belies it’s true size
when viewed from beneath, Yeah yeah

90% of its mass lies below the surface
20% of my friends think the lord has cursed us,
Tell you what, we can
flip a coin, we can flip a coin.

A fine displacement, discovered in secret,
And most of the rocks are bare but we’ll develop it.
Munitions, diesel, a team of thought,
Bright-eyed eagers and
super high dotsSuper high dots
Super high dots again and again ah yo yo

A specially brokered deal for my friend,
The scientific American
Scientific American yo yo

Scientific American
Scientific American
Scientific American
Yeah yeah

How do you protect yourself,
From hackers and viruses?
Get an analogue digital data dreamboat,
You can float on a sea of MB

So don’t suppress us,
Intelligent bullies,
You muscle your car with brains,
You Infiniti.

Parched turf battle, making new
Dentures begone, keyboard
Cops! Nobel Prizes, of different sizes,
Guilty profit reward
For 2002. You…

De-institutionalize
The institution of lies
Do you realize what the newsman said?
Faith is…

Scientific American
Scientific American
Scientific American
Yeah yeah

Shoulder clutching and flush in a crowd,
The riot act readers can’t be heard they’re speaking too loud
Hey yo, the better you is featured this month,
The holiday shop guide. Ask the experts,

Scientific American careers,
Beers! Big breasted women
Hotel abusin’ crinkled up wrap and
I’m a fan of the scientific American man,
Tific American man,
Tific American man, a here we go!

De-institutionalize
The institution of lies
Do you realize what the madman said?
God is…

Scientific American
Scientific American
Scientific American
Yeah yeah
