WEEK 17/52:

This song grew out of a conscious choice to bring a faster song to the project. Tempo is something Joel and I have begun paying more attention to when it comes to writing. We’ve found we sometimes have a natural tendency to write at slower tempos, which is all well and good, but if you take it down, you’ve got to bring it right back up again (so to speak).

It’s a good thing to be aware of when engaged in a project such as this, so as to avoid having a string of tunes that are all the same energy level. So beginning with just a drum beat (at 110 bpm I believe, which feels like 220 with the double-time pattern), I built the thing, first bringing in the chord progression, and then struggling long and hard with lyrics. Some songs seems to write themselves, and others, like Daylight Savings, you have to drag kicking and screaming into existence. The daylight savings concept was for me an interesting symbol for time itself, how we spend our time, and how we try to maximize it with the ones we love.

The staying-awake-all-night theme was inspired by this year’s Nuit Blanche, Toronto’s annual roam-the-streets-all-night arts festival. With this week’s release (week 17 of our 52-week journey), we’ve reached the end of our 2nd eight-song ‘album’, which we are calling Brunswick Project BETA. Stay tuned for a groovy cover track to be released next week! – Steve

It’s getting darker earlier
I haven’t slept a wink
Daylight savings time
See what the day brings
I’m saving up my time to spend on you

Where all the really cool kids
Rock their heavy eyelids
Fight to stay awake
Until day day break
I’ll stay awake with you

Daylight savings time
See what the day brings
I’m saving up my time to spend on you

All the time I tried to keep on my side
Was never really mine
And when morning comes we’ll be on the run
Cause we’re on borrowed time
We’re on borrowed time
We’re on borrowed time

Night owls and vampire bats
Sleeping dogs and alley cats
I’ll stay awake with you
