This latest jam is pretty experimental – we fused together a couple of very different song seeds and threw in some Industrial influence, pretty bizarre lyrical symbolism, as well as a key change near the end. We’ve been working on some fairly poppy stuff lately, so this was a chance to just cut loose with some complexity. Hope you like it. – Joel

The first half of Family Tree started out as a short piano song. I was trying to write a love song, but I also wanted it to be about messing up and having to apologize. It had a verse and a chorus but not much else.
When we lived in the Brunswick house in 2009, me and Buxton were jamming with Steve Hobbs and Mike Palumbo one night, and this cool improvised jam came out. Listening back to the recording of the night’s music, I realized this one bit would make a cool second half to this song.
What came out in the end was a song about family, both the family you grow up in and the family you try to build for yourself. A bittersweet reality of life is that you need to in some ways abandon the first type of family in order to have the second kind of family, or even to have a life of your own. It’s about how we as humans always seem to hurt the ones we love. – Steve

LYRICS
I’m on my way
Today you’ll say, I’m sorry
I think we’ve done
Something no one, has thought of
You got away with it and I’ll never tell
You’ve got a way with me, I’m under your spell
We’re in a club
Here in the public library
We’re not too loud
We’re not allowed to ever be
You got away with it and I’ll never tell
You’ve got a way with me, I’m under your spell
Maybe, I’ll find my family
Climb the family tree
I say, love the ones you hate
The ones you love can wait
The sun, won’t forget to shine
Triggers in my mind
You got away with it and I’ll never tell
You’ve got a way with me, I’m under your spell
